Agustín Canobbio says Uruguay do not feel inferior to anyone as they head into a final Group H match that now carries one outcome only: win or go home. Uruguay must beat Spain to progress, and Spain arrive unbeaten in 33 games.

Canobbio Sets Uruguay’s Line

“We don’t feel inferior to anyone,” Canobbio said before the match. He added that “Uruguay has always been strong when it believes in itself and that has to be our starting point.”

That is the line Uruguay have to carry into a game against the European champions. The task is simple in structure and harsh in execution: only a victory keeps their World Cup campaign alive.

Spain Bring The Run

Spain’s form is the reason the margin is so thin. They arrive unbeaten in 33 games, and Marcelo Bielsa and Luis de la Fuente are meeting as coaches for the first time in a fixture that puts their ideas against each other as much as the two teams.

De la Fuente said he was “I’m a big admirer of Marcelo Bielsa” and recalled, “When I was on the dole for 18 months, I spent five, six months watching all his training sessions.” He also said, “I learned so much from him and he was very innovative.”

Bielsa has his own view of the opponent across from him in Guadalajara: “The football he’s achieved with Spain is exquisite.”

Uruguay Carry The Friction

There is another layer to Uruguay’s position. After the 2024 Copa América, Luis Suárez left the national team and said players had asked for a meeting to request that Marcelo Bielsa at least say “buen dia” when he saw them.

Uruguay were also unable to defeat Saudi Arabia, and the broader picture around the squad has been uneven enough that the final Group H match now feels like a test of more than tactics. Uruguay and Spain enter with very different records, and the pressure sits entirely on the side that has not won at the World Cup.

For Uruguay, the route is narrow: beat Spain, end the wait, and stay alive in Group H. Anything else shuts the door on this campaign.
