England table World Cup plans changed after Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay secured a round of 32 place for Thomas Tuchel’s side. England are through, but the match against Panama will decide whether they top Group L and which knockout path they take next.
Tuchel still has work to do against Panama to make sure England finish first in Group L. If they do, their last-32 match will be on Wednesday July 1 at 5pm UK time, against a third-placed team from Group E, Group H, Group I, Group J or Group K.
Spain open the door
The result that settled England’s position came from Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay. That is the result that locked in the round of 32 place, even before England finish their own group campaign.
What changes now is the route. England do not have a fixed last-32 opponent yet. As things stand, they would face Senegal in the last 32, but if England beat Uzbekistan on Sunday they would face DR Congo instead. The bracket is still moving around them because the third-placed qualifiers are not fully settled.
Group L still decides the route
That leaves Panama as the match that matters most for England’s bracket position. Finish top and they stay on the Group L winners’ path; drop points and the knockout route changes with it.
The next round already has a date and time attached to the Group L winners’ slot: Wednesday July 1 at 5pm UK time. From there, England could move into a potential last-16 tie in Mexico City on Monday July 6 at 1am UK time, and that side of the bracket still leaves Brazil as a possible last-eight opponent on Saturday July 11.
Tuchel’s bracket watch
The wider draw shows how quickly the bracket can shift. Holders Argentina could wait in the semi-finals, and England could face Spain in the final. France and Germany are on course to meet in the last 16, while Portugal and Spain are on course to meet there too.
For England, the immediate task is simpler than the bracket ahead of them: get past Panama and settle Group L first. Do that, and the route becomes clearer; fail to do it, and the knockout picture keeps changing around them.
