Heatwave forecast: An Extreme Heat Warning goes into effect this afternoon across eastern Iowa and lasts through Tuesday evening. Showers and storms move through first, then rain and cloud cover clear and temperatures spike, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s.
People south of I-80 could feel triple-digit heat later today, and Monday will bring similar conditions across all of eastern Iowa. Overnight temperatures only fall to the mid 70s, leaving little relief between the afternoon peak and the next day’s heat.
Cedar Rapids and eastern Iowa
Showers and storms moved into northwestern Iowa this morning and will reach eastern Iowa later this morning, then move into the northern and central counties during the late morning. The storms bring isolated damaging winds and a quarter-sized hail threat, while winds behind them pick up to 20 to 30 mph.
By the early afternoon, the rain and cloud cover move out. That is when the hotter air takes over, and temperatures will spike across southern Iowa after the morning system passes. The warning covers the same stretch of time when the day turns from wet to hot.
Monday and Tuesday
Monday will bring highs in the low to mid 90s, with feels-like temperatures reaching the triple digits across all of eastern Iowa. Tuesday will look similar, and winds will stay breezy before calming for Wednesday.
The Extreme Heat Warning remains in place through Tuesday evening. Highs stay in the low to mid 90s through next weekend, and storm chances return Tuesday and through the weekend.
