Fans spent Friday night moving between Sonoma Raceway and the 50-acre lot across Highway 121, where campers settled into RVs and tents after the General Tire 150. For anyone asking what channel is the NASCAR race on today, the bigger on-site story was where the weekend crowd chose to sleep and how long it could stay there.
Josh Eele made the trip from Gresham, Oregon, for his sixth year camping at the raceway. He was among the fans using the campground during NASCAR’s annual June weekend, and the lot known as 50 Acres stayed active after the race finished.
Josh Eele Returns To 50 Acres
Eele’s repeat trip says a lot about how this setup works. Campers do not just show up for a single race and leave. They return to the track area, park in the 50-acre lot across Highway 121, and use RVs and tents as their base through the weekend.
The campground drew people from outside Oregon as well. Rob Hartman and Nathan Hughes, both from Carson City, Nevada, were among the campers there, turning the lot into a small regional gathering instead of a local parking overflow.
Flags, RVs, And A Slower Pace
Vehicles in the campground carried flags for Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, and Ryan Blaney. That kind of display fits the scene at Sonoma Raceway, where the fan area is part tailgate spot and part overnight stay.
Longtime attendees also describe the campground as a fun, lively mini city, but not the one it used to be. Years ago, campers had full-service bars, hot tubs, and dirt bikes; now off-road vehicles are no longer allowed, and only portable showers and bathrooms are available.
Sonoma Raceway still allows campers to stay until Monday, even though some leave right after Sunday’s marquee race concludes. That makes the weekend planning simple for anyone hauling in an RV or pitching a tent: arrive for the Friday night race, settle in for Sunday, and decide whether to pull out immediately after the final race or hold the site through Monday.
Sonoma Raceway Weekend Stay
The setup gives the June visit a different rhythm from a quick day trip. Fans finish the race, walk back across Highway 121, and return to the 50 Acres lot instead of driving home the same night.
For campers, the practical takeaway is straightforward. Sonoma Raceway keeps the lot open through Monday, so the weekend is not over when the cars stop running on Sunday. The pace around the campground has changed, but the routine has not.
