Kevin Huerter is staying with the Detroit Pistons on a three-year, $27 million deal. The move keeps a rotation wing in place as he prepares for his first full season with Detroit after joining the team during last season's shuffle.
Detroit Keeps Huerter
The Pistons reportedly agreed to the new contract on Monday, giving the 27-year-old a clearer runway after his brief late-season stint. He was traded to Detroit as part of a three-team swap that also involved the Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 3.
Huerter’s role in Detroit was defined by volume and efficiency in separate lanes. In 25 games after the move, he averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 44.3 percent from the field.
Huerter’s Shooting Split
The catch is at the arc. Huerter shot 29.4 percent on three-point attempts with Detroit, well below his career mark of 36.8 percent. That contrast explains why the Pistons could value the fit while still leaving room for better perimeter production once he settles into a longer role.
His path to this point runs through several stops. The Atlanta Hawks selected him with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings traded for him in July 2022, and he later landed with the Bulls in the middle of his 2024-25 campaign before arriving in Detroit.
Detroit’s Next Layer
The new deal gives the Pistons continuity after they were eliminated in the second round last season. It also locks in a player who has averaged 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 27.4 minutes per game across his NBA career, and it sets up a full season to see whether his Detroit numbers rise closer to his longer track record.
