England topped Group L with seven points, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup final date route now starts with DR Congo in Atlanta. Thomas Tuchel’s side moved through the group stage after drawing with Ghana and beating Croatia and Panama.

That leaves England into the knockout rounds with a route that can still stretch much further. If they get past DR Congo, Mexico could be next, with the bracket pointing toward Mexico City and the Estadio Azteca.

Tuchel’s group-stage return

Three matches produced the seven points that sent England through as Group L winners. Tuchel’s side did not need a perfect record to finish first, but they did enough to control the bracket from the top.

The group-stage numbers also show why this matters now rather than later. Winning the group means England avoid a different path and immediately get a knockout opponent in DR Congo, a side that reached this phase for the first time.

DR Congo’s first knockout test

DR Congo arrived here after finishing third in Group K. They drew with Portugal, lost to Colombia and beat Uzbekistan, conceding only three goals across those three fixtures.

That is the challenge waiting for England. DR Congo are ranked 46th in the world, have never been in the knockout stages before, and carry the experience of players such as Yoane Wissa, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe and Arthur Masuaku.

The collision is awkward for England even after a clean group finish. DR Congo’s route has already been complicated by their January 2026 Africa Cup of Nations exit to Algeria, but their World Cup run has been more controlled than their ranking suggests.

Mexico City on the horizon

If England progress again, Mexico could sit in the next round. Mexico won all three of their group-stage fixtures, scored six goals and conceded none, and are ranked ninth in the world.

They have not lost a competitive fixture since a 2-0 defeat by Honduras in November 2024, a run that now stands at 12 matches unbeaten. Their early knockout games, including a possible tie with England, will be played in Mexico City at the Estadio Azteca, more than 7,000 feet above sea level.

England have the cleaner start, but the path gets sharper from here. A group win bought them control; it did not buy them an easy route, and the next step already looks harder than the last one.
