State of Decay 3 is now tied to a possible studio sale. Microsoft is reportedly looking for a buyer for Undead Labs, and if one does not turn up, the game could be cancelled before release.
The pressure is not abstract. State of Decay 3 was at the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month, received a 2027 release window, and is still running playtests. That makes the current swing especially sharp for a project that has already been in motion for six years since it was announced this July.
Undead Labs in Seattle
Undead Labs is based in Seattle, Washington, and Gamesbeat said work was happening behind the scenes to find a buyer for the studio. Windows Central backed up that report, putting the sale effort at the center of Microsoft’s response to its gaming reset.
Hundreds of jobs are at risk across Microsoft’s gaming business, which includes Bethesda and Activision Blizzard studios and publishing operations. Asha Sharma said the business has a 3% accountability margin, and added: "Excluding Activision Blizzard King, over the past five years, we have spent over $20 billion on ongoing investments in our content, platform, and hardware subsidy, but our annual revenue has declined nearly half a billion during that time. Going forward, this cannot continue."
Craig Duncan steps down
The Game Business said Xbox Game Studios boss Craig Duncan had stepped down, another sign that Microsoft’s gaming organization is moving through more than one change at once. Jason Schreier also used the word "bloodbath" in reporting on Xbox, a blunt read on the scale of the cuts and studio pressure.
Unionized Xbox workers called for immediate bargaining yesterday after the layoff reports, while IGN said it had asked Microsoft for comment on the studio closure reports and had not yet received a response. That leaves the buyer search as the hinge point: if Microsoft closes a deal for Undead Labs, State of Decay 3 can keep moving; if it does not, the project is exposed to the same closure logic now hanging over the rest of the gaming business.
