LeBron James news turned on Draymond Green’s reported decision to give up his $27.6 million option for next season. That move put Golden State in position to use the $15 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception, creating a real route to bring James to the Bay Area.
Draymond Green and Golden State
Green reportedly declined his 2026-2027 player option on Monday, and that is the change that matters most. Golden State’s payroll flexibility widened enough to make a LeBron James offer possible at a level the Warriors could not reach before.
The number is still modest. The Warriors can now offer $15 million, which is far below what the Lakers can put on the table if James stays put. That gap shapes the entire pitch: Golden State can offer a basketball fit, not top-tier money.
Stephen Curry and LeBron James
The appeal for Golden State is obvious from the names involved. James would join Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, a pairing league sources have long speculated could be his first choice if the right conditions line up.
Rich Paul and Klutch Sports Group also tie Green and James together in a way that makes the path easier to imagine than most star chases. LeBron James seems to be getting closer to deciding whether a way-below-market-price deal is enough to leave the Lakers.
Anthony Davis and Kristaps Porzingis
One possible condition has been pushed to the side. NBA sources say Anthony Davis has not been explicitly demanded by James or Rich Paul as a requirement for a Warriors move, while the Davis-for-Jimmy Butler idea remains a hypothetical rather than serious trade negotiations between the Wizards and Warriors.
That matters because a Davis acquisition would almost certainly take Golden State out of any talks to retain Kristaps Porzingis. The Warriors’ new option gives them a path, but the cost of building around it could close off other roster plans before James ever makes a decision.
Will LeBron James actually choose the Warriors for $15 million when the Lakers can pay far more? That is the part still hanging over the story, and it is the part that will decide whether Green’s opt-out becomes the start of a move or just the opening of one.
