Bruno Guimaraes Blocks Arsenal Under £60million Bid; Isak Stays

Arsenal’s under-£60million bid for Bruno Guimaraes was turned down by Newcastle United. Isak is not part of this move, but the rejection keeps Guimaraes where Newcastle want him. Bruno Guimaraes remains under contract for two more years and stays at the center of a market that Arsenal are still testing.

Arsenal Test Newcastle United

The offer came in under £60million, and Newcastle United said no. That response fits their stance on Guimaraes, a 28-year-old midfielder they are treating as a player they do not want to move on.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, and the fee then was $79.3m. Arsenal’s bid sits well below that figure, which shows how far apart the clubs are on valuation even before any follow-up move is made.

Guimaraes And Brazil Form

His value to Newcastle is not only about the market. Guimaraes has also delivered three assists in Brazil’s three group matches at the World Cup, and he was on the radar at Arsenal before he signed for Lyon in January 2020 at 22.

Tiago Nunes said Edu Gasper asked for his view on Guimaraes during the January 2020 transfer window. He added: "He (Edu) just wanted to get my view about (Guimaraes’) characteristics, and see whether I thought he would be a good fit for Arsenal."

Nunes also said: "Their philosophy was changing with Mikel Arteta’s arrival (the previous month) and they wanted players who could keep possession and interpret space — the exact things that Bruno does perfectly." That assessment still matches the profile Arsenal have been chasing, even after previous interest in Alex Scott and Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle Hold Their Line

Newcastle United insist Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale even as Arsenal have already tested the market with a bid under £60million. The club’s response leaves the next step with Arsenal: raise the offer, or move on and leave Newcastle’s midfield untouched.

Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle United now sit in the middle of a familiar winter market pattern. Arsenal have asked the question, Newcastle have answered it, and the only detail left is whether the same bid is enough to end the chase or only start it.
