Leeds United have made contact over a summer deal for Widell Zetterström, the Derby County goalkeeper who has also drawn interest from Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolves. The approach lands as Leeds keeps working through a goalkeeper reshuffle that has already run through Illan Meslier, Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow.

Widell Zetterström at Derby County

Zetterström has spent two years at Derby County since joining from Djurgardens, and he established himself as the Championship club’s number-one goalkeeper. His contract runs until 2027, with Derby County holding an option for another year, which gives the club leverage in any summer negotiation.

Fabrizio Romano said enquiries had been made over a price for Zetterström. That is the practical hurdle now: Leeds can open contact, but the fee still has to fit a market where Derby can point to a long deal and other clubs can keep the bidding pressure alive.

Sweden and Japan test

Zetterström’s profile is not built only on club form. He was sidelined for Sweden’s opening two World Cup group games, then drafted in for the final group match against Japan and made several top saves in a 1-1 draw that sent Sweden into the round of 32.

Japan and Sweden Set Up Jacob Widell Zetterström Test in Group F gives the clearest snapshot of why he stayed on Leeds’ radar: he was asked to handle a high-pressure game and delivered enough to keep Sweden moving.

Leeds have had recurring problems in goal over recent seasons, with Meslier making several mistakes before Perri replaced him and then Darlow taking over in the second-half of the campaign. That sequence has already pushed the club toward a wider summer reset, and a move for Zetterström fits the same logic as the deals already pursued for Harry Wilson, Shea Charles and Julian Brandt.

Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolves

Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolves remain in the race for his signature, so Leeds are not negotiating from a clean runway. For a 27-year-old keeper on a contract through 2027, the deal is now less about talent identification than about who moves fastest and who blinks first on valuation.

Whether Leeds United meet Derby County’s asking price for Widell Zetterström is the point that will decide this one, and the club’s goalkeeping rebuild looks unfinished until that answer arrives.
