Kylian Mbappe hugs Didier Deschamps after Sweden goal — Didier Deschamps' Mother

Kylian Mbappe scored against Sweden and ran straight to Didier Deschamps. The hug came after Deschamps returned to the dugout following his mother’s funeral, a personal moment inside France’s Round of 32 match.

Mbappe’s finish was his fifth goal of the tournament and moved him one behind Lionel Messi. He then dedicated the goal to Deschamps, turning a routine scoring move into something far more pointed.

Deschamps returned to France

Deschamps had left the World Cup camp after learning of his mother’s death following France’s 3-0 win over Iraq. He missed the final group stage match against Norway, where Guy Stephan was in the dugout for the 4-1 win.

Before that Norway match, France asked FIFA for a minute’s silence and black armbands for Deschamps’ mother. FIFA rejected the request and instead instructed a silence for the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela.

Rabiot on Deschamps

Adrien Rabiot said Deschamps came back with “the willpower to go as far as possible in this World Cup.” He also said, “He smiled a lot. He tried to be enthusiastic, although I know that he’s very affected by his grief. I think he’s trying not to show it, not to transmit any negative to the squad.”

Deschamps gave the same picture before the Sweden match. “How am I? I'm doing okay. Obviously I had complicated days where I was devastated,” he said. “But for my own personal well-being and for the good of the France team, I had to leave. Afterwards, they did what was necessary. Since I've been back, I've got back into this preparation for this match against Sweden. It’s good to have my head occupied.”

France stayed in the tournament, and the next public image from this story was Mbappe reaching his coach after the goal. The broader gap is still the same one that shaped the moment: Deschamps returned to football while carrying a family loss that the match could not erase.
