Stefanos Tsitsipas Tops Hugo Gaston, Reaches Wimbledon Round Two

Stefanos Tsitsipas moved into the Wimbledon second round with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Hugo Gaston, his fifth trip to that stage in his career. The result kept him alive in a draw that now brings Novak Djokovic next.

Tsitsipas in four sets of pressure

Tsitsipas handled the match in straight sets and never needed a recovery job. He took the first set 6-1, stayed in control through a 6-4 second set, and finished it with a 6-2 third set.

The win also ended a run of recent short stays in Grand Slams. He had not reached the third round of a Grand Slam in 2025 or so far in 2026, and his last run past the second round came at the French Open in 2024.

Djokovic waiting in the second round

Djokovic is the next obstacle, and the numbers tilt heavily in his favor. He has won all 11 of the last head-to-head meetings with Tsitsipas and leads their series 12-2 across 14 matches.

That makes Wednesday’s matchup the sharper test. Djokovic has won Wimbledon seven times, last won it in 2022, reached the final in 2023 and 2024, and lost in the semifinals in 2025.

Wimbledon history for Tsitsipas

This run also stands out because Wimbledon has rarely come easily for Tsitsipas. He had lost in the first round there four times before this win, and this is only the fifth time he has reached the second round at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

He has already solved the first step. Now the draw turns to a matchup he has not won since 2020, and one that has not landed in this tournament since the two met in 2024.
