Chelsea have completed the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven-year contract, with England first flagging the move. The 21-year-old arrives after a loan at Cagliari that put him into regular Serie A football and pushed him into Chelsea's long-term defensive planning.

Palestra told Chelsea club media that the move had been on his mind from the first day Chelsea wanted him. “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” he said.

Xabi Alonso and Chelsea

The transfer is Chelsea's first since Xabi Alonso took charge, and Palestra said the manager had already spoken to him about the way the team should play. Palestra added: “We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”

That gives Chelsea a defender who has already handled senior football at a high volume. Palestra made 37 Serie A appearances on loan at Cagliari last season, scored one goal and made four assists, and was named Serie A defender of the year as Cagliari finished 14th.

Cagliari and Serie A

Most of his minutes came as an attacking right-sided wing-back in Cagliari's 3-5-2, where he also occasionally featured on the left. He ranked 12th among Serie A outfielders for minutes played last season with 3,084, a workload that explains why Chelsea see him as more than a short-term cover option.

The fit is not entirely settled. The source describes Palestra as a right-sided wing-back, but Chelsea could also use him on the left after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid left Jorrel Hato as Chelsea's only senior left-sided defensive option, while Reece James and Malo Gusto remain the right-backs.

Italy and the next step

Palestra made his Atalanta debut in December 2023 and then took another step for Italy in March, starting with the 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in the World Cup qualification semi-finals before winning his second cap against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final, which Italy lost on penalties. Chelsea have not said exactly how he will be used, but the length of the contract shows how far they are willing to commit to a player who has already moved from academy prospect to senior international.
