Bih country takes Bosnia and Herzegovina into a World Cup round-of-32-match against the U.S. men at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, July 1, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. It is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s first knockout-round appearance and only its second World Cup trip.

The group-stage path that led here was uneven but enough: Bosnia and Herzegovina opened with a 1-1 draw against Canada, lost 4-1 to Switzerland and beat Qatar 3-1. The match at Levi’s Stadium now gives Bosnia and Herzegovina a place in the bracket that the country had not reached before.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup route

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountainous country in Eastern Europe bordered by Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, with roughly 3.4 million residents. The name Bosnia and Herzegovina dates back to the mid-19th Century, but the most recent merger became official about three decades ago, which is why one country can still be described as two historical names joined into a single state.

The route to that state runs through the Bosnia War, which broke out in 1991 and 1992 during the collapse of Yugoslavia and ended in 1995. The Dayton Peace Accords bound Bosnia and Herzegovina into one decentralized state after the war, giving the country a single international identity while preserving a political structure built from separate parts.

Bosna River and Herceg

The names also carry older geography. Bosnia comes from the Bosna River, which flows through Bosnia and Herzegovina and the heart of the region, while Herzegovina comes from Herceg, German for duke. A nobleman who called himself Duke of Hum and the Coast amassed land known as Duke’s territory, and that title later shaped the name still used today.

For readers headed into Wednesday night, the practical point is simple: the match is set, the stage is the round-of-32-match, and Bosnia and Herzegovina have already crossed the line that separates group play from elimination soccer. What comes next is the first knockout test at Levi’s Stadium, where the country’s second World Cup appearance now carries into the bracket itself.
