Michael Weatherly is back as Tony DiNozzo this fall, giving NCIS a season-long arc in Season 24. The return lands after the cancellation of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, and it puts one of the franchise’s original faces back into the show’s main rotation.
Season 24 will air Tuesdays at 8:00 PM, ET/PT on CBS and stream on Paramount+. That schedule matters because the series is not treating this as a one-off cameo; it is folding Weatherly back into the weekly rollout with a defined run instead of a brief promotional appearance.
Weatherly’s NCIS timeline
Weatherly first played Tony on JAG’s two-episode backdoor pilot for NCIS in Season 8, then stayed with the show as a main cast member until Season 13, when he left in the finale. That history gives the return more weight than a nostalgia stunt: the character is coming back to the same series framework that made him a regular presence for years.
NCIS: Tony & Ziva premiered last fall and later reunited Weatherly with Cote de Pablo, then was canceled after one season at Paramount+ six months before this return news. The practical result is that the franchise is moving the Tony side of the story back onto NCIS itself instead of leaving it on a separate track.
CBS keeps the Ziva question open
CBS declined to comment on whether Cote de Pablo will also return to NCIS or whether the events of NCIS: Tony & Ziva will be retconned. That leaves the cleanest reading of Season 24 as a partial reset: Weatherly is back, but the series has not said how much of the spinoff’s Paris-based ending will carry over.
For viewers, that means the immediate value is the same one that powered the spinoff in the first place: Tony DiNozzo is back in play, but the surrounding continuity is still unsettled. The season can absorb him now and sort out the larger Tony-and-Ziva timeline later, which is the most likely way to keep the return from getting boxed in by spinoff baggage.

Season 24 of NCIS arrives this fall with Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Katrina Law, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, and Gary Cole already in place.
