Swiatek controls Pliskova

Swiatek needed 70 minutes to finish the match, and the first set was gone in 25 minutes. That left Pliskova, a former World No. 1, with little room to recover once the second set opened.

The win also pushed Swiatek to 4-0 in her career against Pliskova. On Thursday, she handled the match with far less strain than her first-round battle against Taylor Townsend, when she said, "It was quite a lot," and later added, "It seemed like the opening match, like everybody wanted to see it, as well. It was already a show, even though it was a first round only. It's quite unusual."

Alexandra Eala awaits

Next is Alexandra Eala, the No. 29 seed, after her comeback win over Maya Joint, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Swiatek and Eala will meet for the third time on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz in Saturday's third round, with a place in the Wimbledon Round of 16 at stake.

The pair have split their two previous matches. Eala beat Swiatek 6-2, 7-5 at the 2025 Miami Open quarterfinals, then Swiatek turned it around with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in Madrid's second round a little over a month later.

Grass changes the edge

Eala said on Thursday, "I think it's going to be tough for me," and, "I'm going to try to make it tough for her, as well." She also said, "It's a different surface than we've played at before, so I think definitely there should be some different aspects to the last time."

She added, "She's won a Slam on grass. She's won a Slam on clay. She's won a slam on hard so I'm expecting a great challenge." Swiatek said, "I don't particularly know her game on grass," and, "Obviously I can watch a little bit. I know how she plays because we played already."

That sets up a match with a clean split and a new surface. Swiatek has already shown she can handle Pliskova with little trouble; Eala has already shown she can break Swiatek once. Saturday decides which version carries into the Round of 16.
