Tesla launched Model YL USA buyers can now order a new Model Y L in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, with the Launch Series starting at $61,990. The six-seat, three-row SUV adds a family layout Tesla has not offered in this market before.
The company’s website lists a base version at around $40,000. The Launch Series adds one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), one year of Supercharging, one year of Premium Connectivity, and a choice of exterior paint, interior color, and wheel option. It also adds special badging, floor mats, puddle lights, suede dash inserts, and sill plates.
Model Y L and Wall Street
Tesla said the Model Y L is a spacious 3-row, 6-seat electric crossover SUV with “exceptional interior space with ample headroom & legroom for all passengers,” which is the practical difference buyers will notice when comparing it with the standard Model Y.
The launch comes after Tesla said second-quarter deliveries reached 480,126 vehicles, its strongest Q2 on record and 25% year-over-year growth, so this new trim arrives while the company is using fresh sales momentum to broaden the Model Y line.
Elon Musk and Model Y L
Elon Musk said last year, “This variant of the Model Y doesn't start production in the US until the end of next year. Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America.” Tesla has now done the opposite by launching the vehicle in the U.S. this week.
The Model Y L first appeared as a China-specific variant in late 2025, where it was developed for larger and more spacious family vehicles. Tesla’s version for the U.S. keeps that larger footprint and the third-row focus, while the company has already retired its older Model S and Model X vehicles in the second quarter.
Deliveries of the Model Y L
Deliveries of the Model Y L are expected to begin in September-October, so buyers who want the Launch Series now have a price and a window, but not a delivery date in hand. The unresolved question is why Tesla reversed course and decided to bring the Model Y L to the U.S. now.
