James Dolan has handed the Rangers' day-to-day ownership responsibilities to quentin dolan, making the 32-year-old the team's new president, chief operating officer and alternate governor. The move puts the younger Dolan in the operational seat while James Dolan stays on as executive chairman.

2 Penn Plaza and Quentin Dolan

Quentin Dolan gave his first-ever interview from inside his office at 2 Penn Plaza, saying, "I think it’s something I’ve been building towards, and I’ll be working my hardest and probably proving to myself for a while that I’m ready," and adding, "For me, the ultimate goal is winning a championship. It’s been a goal of mine to really continue my father and grandfather’s legacy, and that’s something that I understood about myself and wanted early on. This is a continuation of that and it feels right." He also said, "Of course, I will be far more present and operationally involved, but this role is much broader."

He arrives with a paper trail inside MSG Sports. Quentin Dolan served as SVP of player performance and science for both the Rangers and Knicks, sat on the MSG Sports board of directors since 2021, and also worked as vice president, strategic adviser to the executive chairman and as investment director. That background suggests a front-office operator who already knows the building, not a fresh outsider learning on the job.

Chris Drury reports upward

Chris Drury will now report to Quentin Dolan instead of James Dolan, but the hockey chain of command does not otherwise change: Drury will continue to lead all decision-making for the Rangers. That split is the practical detail readers should watch, because the title change shifts ownership oversight without handing over the roster or hockey department.

The Rangers are the only team affected. The Knicks are unchanged, even as Quentin Dolan's involvement comes after he was heavily involved in the Knicks ending their 53-year NBA title drought. James Dolan's retreat from direct day-to-day control marks his first step back from one of his teams in 27 years, and it fits a longer process of passing responsibility toward his children.

James Dolan's 27-year mark

James Dolan assumed control of both the Knicks and the Rangers 27 years ago, so this handoff is not just a title shuffle. It changes who sits closest to the daily operation of the Rangers, while leaving the on-ice authority with Drury and preserving James Dolan's executive chairman role. Quentin Dolan said, "There’s a quote that I’m not sure if he knows that I even know, that the art of management is being able to control an outcome without being present," and added, "I continue to work on my management skills and keep that in mind, that ultimately that’s the standard I have to strive for."
