Laros Duarte: Cape Verde reaches World Cup knockouts after 0-0 draw

Laros Duarte was at the center of Cape Verde’s 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, the result that sent the Blue Sharks into the World Cup knockout stage. Cape Verde will face Argentina in Miami on Friday, and the team is now set to become the smallest nation in history to play a knockout match at the World Cup.

Janice Miranda watched the Saudi Arabia game with thousands of others at Gamboa Beach and described the scene as the country moved into a new phase of its World Cup campaign. "It was simply incredible," she said after the draw sealed qualification.

Gamboa Beach after 8am

The celebration ran long past the 8am close of Festival da Gamboa, where the stage had been turned into one of the country’s biggest World Cup watch parties on the opening night of the three-day event. Cape Verdeans stayed in place after the final whistle, turning a football result into a public gathering that stretched well beyond the scheduled end of the festival.

Miranda said the moment was bigger than one match. "Seeing so many Cape Verdeans, along with so many tourists and visitors, celebrating this important milestone with us was an unforgettable experience. Our Blue Sharks’ World Cup campaign has been phenomenal. We’re all incredibly proud of them."

Praia and the nine islands

The draw fits into a wider run that has changed daily life across Cape Verde. Free fan zones have been set up across Praia and the nine inhabited islands, and the national flag is now visible on houses, cars, and motorbikes in a way that was not common before the tournament.

That shift has followed a campaign that has carried real weight in Cape Verde. The country first took part in World Cup qualifying in 2000, drew with Spain during the tournament, and saw Kevin Pina score a wondergoal against Uruguay. Over the past two weeks, goalkeeper Vozinha has gained 17.5 million new Instagram followers.

Friday in Miami

The next test comes against Argentina in Miami on Friday, and the scale of the matchup is stark against the backdrop of what Cape Verde has already done. Anibele Lizardo put the mood in plain terms: "It’s a party. Each game is a party," she said, before adding, "They told us we had a 1% chance to win but we don’t care about the odds. We just want to party."

Joao Pina said the Spain game brought an official half day off, then added, "But really we can say no one worked that day." Now the focus shifts to whether Cape Verde can carry the same momentum into Miami, where the World Cup run moves from an unexpected draw to a knockout stage the country has never reached before.
