The US women’s rugby side faces South Africa in Johannesburg on July 4, and the day also brings the US men’s opener against Portugal in Denver at the World Rugby Nations Cup. The matches land on America’s 250th birthday, giving both US teams a rare showcase on a day built for attention.

Georgie Perris-Redding said the group has spent the week on the occasion as much as the rugby. “We’ve been talking about it all week,” she said. “Honestly, we’re trying to find a way to get some fireworks.” She added: “That’s not looking too likely to me right now, but growing the game is what massively drives this group as well, and I think being able to do that on such an occasion at Ellis Park is arguably once-in-a-lifetime.”

Kate Zackary’s 50th cap

Kate Zackary arrives at the match after a busy week. She played in the PWR final for Ealing Trailfinders last week and then traveled south to join the Eagles for her 50th cap, a mark Jack Hanratty said makes her only the third Eagle to reach 50.

Hanratty called it “a lovely moment for Kate, especially after captaining the Trailfinders last Saturday.” He also said, “We’re not going to make emotional decisions as staff,” before adding that Zackary “has earned another cap, and that one is number 50, and hopefully we’ll make some arrangements for her to lead the team out.”

South Africa in Johannesburg

The women’s match carries more than symbolic weight. South Africa is 10th in the world and the US is eighth, so the gap is narrow enough for the result to matter without changing the basic shape of the matchup.

The Springbok women made the World Cup knockouts in England last year. The US women came out of the Pac Four in April with a win over Australia and defeats by Canada and New Zealand, so this trip gives them a cleaner test than the recent results line suggests.

Scott Lawrence in Denver

The other half of the July 4 picture is in Denver, where Scott Lawrence’s men open the World Rugby Nations Cup against Portugal. The two games turn one date into a split-screen day for the US program, with one team in Johannesburg and the other at home.

That leaves the women with a milestone cap, the men with a tournament opener, and both sides carrying the same pressure: make the Fourth of July more than a date on the calendar. How the US men handle Portugal under Lawrence is still the unanswered piece.
