Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Debuts at 15 for India in Old Trafford Sooryavanshi

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his international debut for India at 15 in the second T20 at Old Trafford. Sooryavanshi arrived with the five-match series level at 0-0 after the first match was abandoned because of rain, and the debut came with the match already carrying the weight of a reset series.

Old Trafford saw the debut

The first clear sign of the occasion came before the scoreline had settled. Sooryavanshi, still 15, took his place for India in Manchester and entered the contest as part of a live series match rather than a dead rubber.

Daniel Norcross said he had “nerves of steel to make his international debut at 15,” while Michael Carberry called the start “an encouraging start on what will be a long journey.” Those reactions matched the pace of the moment: a teenager in his first international outing, facing England in a second T20 that had to carry the series after the opener was washed out.

Will Jacks ended the first innings

Will Jacks was the bowler who got him out in international cricket for the first time. Jos Buttler completed the stumping, and Sooryavanshi walked off for 14 with India 50-1.

Norcross called it “a clever bit of bowling from Will Jacks, wide of the off stump, and he's the first man to get Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out in international cricket.” Carberry added that Jacks “saw Vaibhav Sooryavanshi coming and he fired it in a little shorter and a little wider. He was left groping for the ball and couldn't make contact.”

India kept its momentum

Abhishek Sharma was still at the crease when Carberry said Sooryavanshi was “seeing them all alike right now,” and he also noted that Old Trafford is “a lovely place to bat once you get in, especially if you enjoy the ball coming on.” The live reading of the innings was simple: India had not lost control, even if the debutant’s first visit ended early.

Norcross compared the debut to Sachin Tendulkar’s 1989 entry into international cricket, but the immediate takeaway was more basic. India had handed a 15-year-old his first cap in the middle of a level series, and England’s first response was to remove him before he could turn the start into a bigger score.

For India, the debate now sits on the next innings: whether this debut becomes a one-off memory or the first step in a longer run at this level. For Sooryavanshi, the milestone has already been set. At 15, he has played an international match for India and been dismissed for 14 in the same innings.
