ABC and Disney+ will launch Disney Celebrates America: The Pursuit of Happiness on June 30, with Deborah Roberts hosting the two-hour special from Walt Disney World Resort. The abc-themed rollout is part of The Walt Disney Company’s America’s 250th Anniversary: Disney Celebrates America initiative tied to the Semiquincentennial.
For Disney+ subscribers, the first piece of the plan is a two-hour special that uses Disney Parks as a gateway into American history, moving from the turn-of-the-century feel of Main Street, U.S.A. to Tomorrowland’s forward-looking energy. Will Reeve will co-host from Disneyland Resort, giving the program one host on each coast.
Disney+ and ABC News Stream
The broader effort stretches beyond the June 30 premiere. During the Fourth of July weekend, Disney will run a 24-hour multi-platform broadcast led by David Muir, with viewers able to tune in through the ABC News Stream on Disney+. That broadcast is set to take audiences across all 50 states with live celebrations, immersive storytelling, performances, and reporting.
Special editions of Good Morning America, World News Tonight with David Muir, and Nightline will air across July 3 and July 4. Disney also says the coverage will honor America’s past, present, and future, which gives the event a national-history frame while still functioning as a company-wide showcase across Disney’s brands and businesses. ABC’s current FCC fight shows how tightly the company is managing its television presence alongside this rollout.
Nashville, Statue of Liberty, France
One piece of the plan, Disney Celebrates America: Nashville’s Star-Spangled Bash, is a live celebration from downtown Nashville featuring performances by iconic artists and musical acts spanning multiple genres. The event also includes one of the largest fireworks and drone shows in the United States, set to a live score by the GRAMMY Award-winning Nashville Symphony.
Other segments widen the lens further. Countdown to America’s 250th celebration reporting will feature rare access inside the Statue of Liberty and a once-in-a-lifetime tribute produced in close partnership with the Consulate General of France in New York. Disney says the programming will also look at U.S. military service members, veterans, and their families who have helped defend their country for two and a half centuries. ABC NBA Draft coverage and bank-rate coverage are separate examples of the network’s broader scheduling, but this holiday package is the clearest test of how Disney is merging history programming with promotion.
The sharpest detail for viewers is the order of access: the Disney+ special arrives first on June 30, then the July 3 and July 4 ABC News lineup builds into the Fourth of July weekend broadcast. What Disney has laid out is a patriotic nationwide tribute that is also a company-wide initiative spanning multiple businesses, and the open question is how much of the 24-hour coverage will be live versus preproduced once the weekend begins.
