Jonas Vingegaard won the opening 19.6km team time trial in Barcelona and took the first yellow jersey of the 2026 Tour de France. Channel 5 Tour De France coverage of the stage opened with Visma-Lease a Bike in front and a slim 12-second gap over Tadej Pogacar.
It was the kind of start that immediately reshaped the race picture. Vingegaard said, “It feels amazing to have the yellow jersey again,” after a finish that put him ahead of Pogacar and left Filippo Ganna second for Netcompany Ineos.
Visma-Lease a Bike Sets the Pace
Visma-Lease a Bike took the stage victory over 19.6km, and the result gave Vingegaard the race lead on day one. He said, “It’s been three years and it’s one of the most beautiful jerseys in cycling. It’s the perfect start for our race.”
That yellow jersey has been out of reach since he last wore it three years ago. Vingegaard also said, “I would say so. Being back in yellow is important. I will enjoy every moment that I’m wearing it.”
Ganna, Pogacar and the Gaps
Filippo Ganna came within eight seconds of taking the first yellow jersey for Netcompany Ineos, but a puncture for Kevin Vauquelin on the approach to Montjuïc cost the team their lead. By the finish, Vauquelin had lost a minute, and Netcompany Ineos were left with second for Ganna rather than the stage win.
Pogacar finished third for Emirates, 12 seconds behind Vingegaard at the uphill finish in Montjuïc. Paul Seixas set the second fastest time before being distanced by 39 seconds from the race lead, while Remco Evenepoel was described as looking a force to contend with.
April 2024 and Yellow
The return to yellow carries weight because Vingegaard’s 2024 season was interrupted by a crash in the Basque country in April 2024 that left him in intensive care with broken ribs, sternum and collarbone, plus a punctured lung. He said afterward, “It’s been a few hard years for me for obvious reasons.”
He added, “I’ve been struggling at times, but now I feel like I can close this chapter.” Asked if this was the most treasured yellow jersey of his career, he said, “I would say so. Being back in yellow is important. I will enjoy every moment that I’m wearing it.”
The early leader has the jersey and the buffer, while Pogacar, Ganna, Seixas and Evenepoel already know the shape of the opening fight. The first clear question now is whether anyone can erase a 12-second gap after Barcelona’s opening test, because Vingegaard has already set the terms of the Tour.
