Manchester United transfer news now points to a formal move for Mason Greenwood, with Roma preparing their first offer to Marseille after he reportedly agreed a five-year contract worth £3.9million a year. If the numbers land where both clubs want them, Manchester United could still take a cut through the sell-on clause built into the Marseille deal.

Greenwood is said to have accepted the salary terms first. The contract is understood to run for five years, and the guaranteed figure is £3.9million a year.
That gives Roma a player-side agreement before they test Marseille with a bid. Roma are preparing a €45m offer, including bonuses and a sell-on clause, while Marseille want €55m for the forward.

The fee gap is the cleanest obstacle. Roma’s opening position sits below Marseille’s asking price, so the first offer is more a starting point than a final solution, and the structure around bonuses and a future sell-on payment could decide how far the two clubs can move.
Manchester United remain part of the financial chain because they sold Greenwood to Marseille for £26.6m in 2024 and are understood to have kept a sell-on clause. That clause could give them up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee, which makes every euro above the initial Marseille purchase price relevant to Old Trafford as well.
Greenwood for Marseille
Greenwood’s own position still leaves room for friction. After being named in Ligue 1's team of the season, he said, “I hope I can stay.” Earlier, he also said, “This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months, but individually, I think I've had a good season.”
He added, “Ligue 1 is a wonderful league,” and, “We play incredible matches and, for me, it's one of the best leagues I've played in.” Even with that message, Roma are moving ahead, and Greenwood has already drawn interest from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Fenerbahce and Juventus.
Roma had made contact with Greenwood’s father in May, and now they are at the point of turning that interest into a formal bid. The next swing is simple: either Roma close the gap to Marseille’s price, or the deal stays in the same bracket where £45m and £55m keep setting the terms.
