Joe Ryan makes AL All-Star roster for second straight year

Joe Ryan made the American League All-Star roster for a second straight year on Saturday night. He got the news in New York while the Minnesota Twins were still in the middle of a season that has them at 43-47 after beating the New York Yankees 11-4 at Yankee Stadium.

Ryan said, “I’m really excited,” and added, “It’s kind of deja vu getting to go back with Buck, too.” He also said, “We were talking about it a couple of weeks ago. We were excited. It’s been a good year.”

The right-hander’s line helps explain why he got another call: 5-5 with a 3.61 ERA, 113 strikeouts and 97 1/3 innings. The Twins can point to that as one of the steady pieces in a season that still has important games ahead before the Aug. 3 deadline.

Ryan’s first trip to the American League All-Star team in 2025 took a longer route. He was originally left off when the team was announced on July 6, 2025, then three days later was added as an injury replacement for Hunter Brown after Rocco Baldelli reached out to Aaron Boone to let him know Ryan would be available to pitch if needed.

That makes this selection different from a simple repeat. He entered this one with the memory of having to work back onto the roster, and with the All-Star Game set for July 14 in Philadelphia.

Byron Buxton’s selection gives the Twins another name in the mix, but Ryan’s own message stayed on the season in front of him. “That’s what we were trying to go for this year,” he said. “Last year was getting on the team and crossing that bridge. Now, doing it again and thinking, ‘We’ve got to keep winning baseball games.’”

He finished by pointing to the stretch the Twins still have to play through: “We’ve got a good stretch this month ahead of us to put our foot down and put ourselves in a spot to add in a month. Keep going from there and play baseball as long as we can this year, keep it rolling.”
