The Guardians game today was delayed again at Progressive Field after heavy rain left the warning track unsafe, even after the teams had initially approved the field. Tanner Bibee was already heading toward the bullpen as the wait stretched past the scheduled start.
The first pitch had been targeted for 3:30, 90 minutes after the original start time. At 3:03 p.m., Stephen Vogt, Will Venable and the umpires were on the field discussing the conditions, with Mike Chernoff also walking out to inspect the warning track.
Progressive Field inspection
The issue was not the playing surface itself. Dirt was still being spread from foul pole to foul pole on the warning track, and small areas of standing water remained in left field and right field. The grounds crew was working as quickly as possible to get the area ready.
That created the contradiction in the delay. The Guardians and White Sox had approved the warning track conditions and planned to play, but the game went back into delay status because safety concerns remained after the inspection. The national anthem had already been sung and the lineups had already been announced before the extra work was required.
Guardians and White Sox stakes
The delay carried more weight than a normal weather pause because the Guardians and White Sox entered July 5 tied in both the season series and the American League Central race. This was the final game of a 4-game series at Progressive Field, so a played game would decide who held the edge in both races.
For the Guardians, the timing also came as the club provided an injury update on Jose Ramirez while he rehabbed from a fractured hamate bone. Whether the game would eventually start on July 5 was still the urgent issue after the warning track work pushed the teams past their first target.
