Neymar Jr Stays on Bench for Norway — Is Neymar Playing In The 2026 World Cup

Neymar Jr is on the bench again, and Is Neymar playing in the 2026 World Cup now points to the same answer for Brazil’s round of 16 match against Norway. Brazil named him among its substitutes before the match while chasing a place in the quarterfinals.

The 34-year-old forward had recovered from a calf injury that had threatened his chances of featuring in his fourth career World Cup. He already made his tournament debut in Brazil’s group stage finale against Scotland, but the next step has been more limited: he did not play a single minute in Brazil’s 2–1 win over Japan on Monday.

Neymar Jr and Brazil bench call

Brazil’s starting lineup for Norway had been set before kickoff, and Neymar was not in it. That leaves him available for Carlo Ancelotti without forcing Brazil to build the match around him from the start.

Ancelotti said, “We were waiting for extra time [to bring Neymar on],” and added, “I spoke with him and told him ’If we haven’t equalized the match, you will enter the match in the 60th or 65th minute.’”

Carlo Ancelotti limits the load

The coach then explained why that move never happened against Japan: “We equalized before then and I didn’t want to change the team’s structure because we were dominating the game.” Gabriel Martinelli’s late goal finished the 2–1 comeback, and Neymar stayed on the bench while Brazil protected the result.

Ancelotti also said Neymar might not be capable of playing for longer than half an hour. That is the practical reason his role keeps shrinking from match to match: Brazil can use him, but only within a narrow window.

Brazil keeps Neymar available

For Brazil, the selection is less about whether Neymar can travel through the knockout bracket and more about how much of him is usable once the game starts. He is available after the calf injury, but the bench tells the real story: Brazil is carrying his name into the round of 16, not handing him the keys to the starting XI.

If Ancelotti turns to him against Norway, the timing will be the whole decision. If he does not, Brazil moves toward the quarterfinals with its most experienced attacking option still waiting for a larger role.
