The owners said they had decided to call it a day because the joy of growing and selling plants had been taken away by the stress and pressure of running a small business in this economy. During the sale, trees, shrubs, plants, compost and pots will all be half price.

Broadland Nurseries has been owned by the same family since 1912, when it began as a small holding and market garden. Greenhouses were erected on part of the site from 1940, giving the nursery a long operating history before this closure.
The decision also follows earlier changes the owners considered for the land. Three years ago, they applied for planning permission to change the use of half the site for a 30-plot campsite and caravan park.
Fens and the Netherlands
The owners said it had become increasingly difficult to compete with plants grown on an industrial scale in the Fens and from the Netherlands. They later dropped the campsite and caravan park plans after objections from neighbours concerned about the impact on the local environment.
That leaves the nursery’s stock to be cleared through the sale rather than carried on into a new trading period. For customers, the practical step is simple: the discounted sale begins on Tuesday, July 7, and the site will remain open daily for the following weeks as the business works through what it has left.
