The numbers came amid a heavy emergency response. The D.C. Office of Unified Communications handled 6,009 calls to 911 citywide, and the 9 p.m. hour was the single busiest hour of the year for the city’s 911 system.

National Mall arrest count

At approximately 8:42 p.m., an adult female was taken into custody at 809 Constitution Ave., NW for failure to obey and resisting arrest. The Metropolitan Police Department recorded that arrest at the National Mall, while the U.S. Park Police said it made three arrests on the Mall and the U.S. Secret Service reported zero arrests for the day.

The citywide arrest total reached 18 on fireworks-related charges. MPD said those arrests involved 12 adults and six juveniles, giving the holiday crowd a clearer picture of how enforcement was spread beyond the Mall itself.

Fireworks and emergency calls

The biggest strain on city systems came from emergency calls tied to illegal or hazardous fireworks, which were the top driver for 911 traffic across Washington, D.C. That demand ran alongside 699 total patient contacts logged between midnight on July 3rd and midnight on July 4th, with dozens of hospital transports directly from the event area.

DC Fire and EMS reported 96 patient contacts and 40 patient transports from the National Mall. George Washington University reported 289 patient contacts, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services reported 314 patient contacts.

Evacuation and response

The National Mall was evacuated just before the Salute to Freedom 250 event because of the threat of severe thunderstorms moving through the area. After the evacuation, attendees flocked to safe haven shelters and Metro stations.

DC Fire and EMS also reported 1,478 distinct incidents across the District, along with 2,774 emergency vehicle responses and 344 patient transports in total. For readers who were on the Mall or moving through the celebration area, the holiday response showed how quickly police, fire, EMS and dispatch calls can stack up during the same night.
