UEFA said FIFA’s Folarin Balogun suspension crossed a red line after the one-match ban from a straight red card was paused for a year. The decision leaves Balogun eligible for Monday night’s World Cup round of 16 against Belgium unless Belgium’s appeal changes it before kickoff.
The UEFA statement called FIFA’s move “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.” It also said, “When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.”
Belgium Appeal Against FIFA
Belgium has already moved. The Royal Belgian Football Association said it asked FIFA for a copy of the decision, an explanation of the process used and its position on the applicable regulations, then said it had “no alternative but to challenge the player’s eligibility for the upcoming match.”
A member of the FIFA appeals committee has been selected to hear the challenge, and submissions must be made by Monday morning. FIFA can still rule before Belgium faces the USMNT on Monday night in Seattle.
Balogun’s red card
Balogun received the straight red card in the USMNT’s World Cup round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. Under FIFA’s rules, that usually brought a one-match ban, which would have ruled him out against Belgium before FIFA suspended the punishment for a one-year probationary period instead of overturning it.
That middle ground is what has drawn the objections. A standard red-card suspension normally removes a player for the next match, but FIFA’s decision left the sanction in place while pausing its immediate effect, creating the eligibility dispute Belgium is now trying to resolve.
Mauricio Pochettino and Balogun
Mauricio Pochettino defended the decision on Sunday, saying, “My reaction is everyone who really loves the sport and trusts the integrity, we celebrate that decision.” He added, “We were punished enough against Bosnia to play with 10 men for 30 minutes, in a decision that was unfair.”
Balogun has scored three goals so far, and his status now sits at the center of a match that could still change before Monday night. Belgium’s filing can still alter whether the USMNT striker takes the field, and the ruling may come before the teams meet in Seattle.
