Portugal vs Spain is set for the World Cup round of 16 after both advanced from the previous round. Mauro Andrade says Portugal needs the match, and he expects a tight game between two sides with quality across every line.
The 29-year-old Portuguese-Cape Verdean midfielder called it a very balanced tie and said, in Portuguese, "Um jogo muito equilibrado, duas equipas com tremenda qualidade em todos os sectores." He added: "Portugal precisa deste jogo" and "Espero um grande jogo das duas equipas e que Portugal passe."
Mauro Andrade on Portugal
Andrade, who plays for Clube Futebol Benfica, also said Portugal has been trying to find itself throughout the World Cup. His view is blunt: "Acho que estamos com grande expectativa."
That optimism sits beside a sharper complaint. He said, "Acho que é uma equipa que se tem vindo a tentar encontrar ao longo do Mundial." He also added that Portugal has maybe the greatest generation of talent it has ever had, but that the performances have not fully matched the names on the sheet.
Portugal and Spain again
The two teams already have a recent knockout history. One year before this World Cup meeting, Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final of the European Nations League.
This time, both arrive from the previous round with clean wins in hand. Portugal beat Croácia 2-1, while Espanha beat Áustria 3-0. The bracket has left them among the four remaining round-of-16 ties in the men’s World Cup.
Quinas and Roja
Andrade’s last line carries the biggest edge in the story. "Mas acho que esperávamos mais de uma equipa que, talvez, tenha a maior geração de talento que Portugal já viu." Then he drew his own line in the sand: "E se não jogarmos bem, mas no final formos campeões do mundo, eu assino por baixo."
That leaves the practical issue in front of Portugal and Spain very plain. Portugal want a result that matches the talent Andrade sees, and Spain arrive with the same knockout pressure after advancing 3-0 in the previous round. How Portugal will solve the collective-ideas problem against Spain is still the part the match itself has to answer.
