Kevin Guskiewicz has chosen to remain at Michigan State University rather than take up the Clemson University presidency, a decision that leaves Clemson searching again after already selecting him as its next leader.

The move comes only months after Guskiewicz became president of Michigan State University in March 2024 and after the Clemson University Board of Trustees chose him in May to be the school's 16th president on a five-year, $1.216 million contract with performance incentives.

On the same day in May that Clemson announced the appointment, Guskiewicz sent an email to the MSU community criticising issues with the school's Board of Trustees. That message pointed to a difficult backdrop to his planned departure, with the issues around governance clearly part of the story.

Clemson's president choice falls through

On Monday, the Clemson University Board of Trustees was told that Guskiewicz would stay at Michigan State for personal reasons. That is a significant reversal, because he had already been announced as Clemson's incoming president.

For Clemson, the immediate issue is straightforward: the university has to reset. When a school has already moved to the point of naming a president, losing that choice means going back into the search process and re-evaluating the timing of the appointment.

The broader point is that this was never just a routine job change. Guskiewicz's earlier email to the MSU community said the school had been dealing with people who "mispresent facts, manipulate situations and selectively use and leak that information to promote personal agendas." That comment underlined the tensions around his decision-making at Michigan State and helps explain why the story developed in such an unusual way.

What happens next for Clemson?

Clemson now faces the task of identifying a new candidate after having already settled on Guskiewicz. The Board of Trustees will need to move quickly, but it also has to be careful: the next appointment must be one the university can stand behind for the long term.

For Michigan State, the result is the opposite. Guskiewicz remains in place, and the school keeps a president it had only recently welcomed in March 2024. For Clemson, though, the search starts again.
