Joe Murphy, the bassist, vocalist and producer for Koopa, has died aged 46. His sister announced the news on Facebook, closing the final chapter on a career that once carried the band into UK chart history.
Koopa became the first band to reach the UK Top 40 through digital sales alone in 2007, and Murphy was central to that run. The group also became the first act to secure a charting single while remaining unsigned to any record label, a rare route in an industry still shaped by label backing.
Koopa's 2007 chart run
From 2004 to 2007, Koopa released two singles via Mad Cow Records, then pushed further with Blag, Steal & Borrow entering at number 31 in 2007. No Trend reached number 71 on the UK Singles Chart, and Stand Up 4 England appeared on the 2006 re-release of England (The Album). Those figures are the backbone of the band's place in the record books, not a footnote.
In 2007, Koopa also supported at the Isle of Wight Festival and won two awards at the Glasswerk New Music Awards. For a band operating outside the usual label system, that mix of chart placement and live exposure kept Murphy's name attached to a very specific kind of independent success.
June 2021 in Colchester
In June 2021, Murphy had a cardiac arrest while behind the wheel in Colchester. After the crash on Mersea Road, Colchester, he was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening state and remained in intensive care for some time.
That timeline matters because it links his death to a serious crash five years earlier, but it does not say the crash caused his death. The only firm conclusion available now is that Murphy's final public chapter began with that emergency in Colchester, and the unanswered question is the exact cause of his death.
Tributes from The Broken Johnny's
The Broken Johnny's said, "Absolutely gutted to hear of the passing of local legend Joe Murphy from the band Koopa." They added, "Grew up with these guys and saw them supporting Special Duties at Colchester Arts Centre before they went off to America. May Joe Rest In Peace now."
Essex Rocks Creative CIC said, "We've left it for a few days so everyone can digest the sad information that our friend Joe Murphy has passed on." The group added that "Joe and his band Koopa were a massive part of our formative years as promoters in the mid 2000s and we feel privileged to have known him on a personal level and worked with him as a musician. Keep playing those riffs Joe. We love you."
