Andrew Gillum arrested in Alabama on July 2 drug charges

Andrew Gillum was arrested in Alabama on July 2 and booked at 10:44 p.m. local time on charges listed as Possession Of Dangerous Drugs, Drug Paraphernalia-1st Offense, and Possession of Marijuana 2nd. The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office jail roster shows he was released on July 3.

The booking adds a new legal episode for Gillum, the former Tallahassee mayor and one-time Democratic nominee for Florida governor. WCTV reached out to the Baldwin County Clerk of Court for a copy of his arrest records, which could show how the charges were processed after the booking.

Gillum’s prior legal history

Gillum’s name has already appeared in earlier legal and political disputes. He was indicted in 2022 on multiple federal charges tied to campaign contribution fraud before and during his 2018 run for governor of Florida.

In 2023, Gillum was found not guilty of lying to the FBI, and the remaining 18 charges against him were ultimately dropped. That outcome left the July 2 arrest as a separate new entry in his record rather than a continuation of the earlier federal case.

Florida race and ballot margin

Gillum served as Tallahassee mayor from 2014 to 2018 and was the Democratic challenger to Ron DeSantis in the 2018 General Election. He won 49.2% of the vote, compared with 49.6% for DeSantis, after narrowly defeating Gwen Graham in the primary election for that race.

The latest arrest shifts attention back to the basic sequence of events: booking, release, and the records that may explain what happened between those steps. For now, the jail roster is the only source in the public record here that places him in custody on July 2 and out again on July 3.
