Mike Matusow was dealt a one-round penalty on Day 2abc of the 2026 WSOP Main Event after exposing one of his hole cards at the streamed feature table.
The penalty briefly took one of poker’s most recognizable figures away from the action, and when he later returned, Matusow was sitting with around 75,500 chips. The hand was already moving quickly before the ruling, with Steven Ross raising to 4,000, Matusow calling with K♣Q♠, and Lee calling from the big blind with A♥7♣.
A familiar name, a familiar flash point
Matusow, known as “The Mouth” for his decades of table talk, has long been one of the game’s most visible personalities. That history gave the ruling extra attention, especially because it came on a streamed feature table during the 2026 WSOP Main Event.
The moment also brought back a previous Main Event disciplinary episode. In 2005, Matusow and Shawn Sheikhan each received ten-minute penalties in the WSOP Main Event, adding another layer of context to the latest ruling.
During the incident on Day 2abc, Matusow argued the situation was not intentional, while Ross responded that he had no idea and apologized. Tournament director Jack Effel stepped in and made it clear the event would not begin that way, saying both players were on a ten-minute penalty and warning that any further talk would lead to a longer punishment.
Matusow was forced away from the table for one orbit and later returned. Before Day 3, he was still looking to find a bag and keep his Main Event run moving forward.
