Danny Ings is expected to sign a one-year deal with Leicester City this weekend, a move that underlines how much work the club still have to do after successive relegations. At 33, the former Liverpool and England striker brings proven Premier League experience at a time when Leicester City are trying to rebuild quickly and sensibly.
The expectation is that Ings will be at Leicester’s Seagrave training ground in the next few days for a medical before the deal is completed. He left Aston Villa in the summer of 2021 and spent last season at Sheffield United, where he played 23 Championship games.
A familiar name, and a familiar need
Leicester City are not just adding another forward. They are trying to put together a squad capable of handling the demands of a major reset, with the club now in need of a complete overhaul if they are to work their way back up the ladder.
Ings fits that brief because he arrives with experience rather than promise. He has made 240 Premier League appearances, and that level of exposure matters when a club is dealing with the uncertainty that comes after back-to-back relegations.
Why Leicester City are turning to experience
There is also a neat bit of history to this move. Back in 2015-16, when Leicester City were winning the Premier League under Claudio Ranieri, Ings had just signed as a free agent for Liverpool. Soon after joining Liverpool, he was seriously injured in one of his first training sessions under Jürgen Klopp, and over the next 12 months he required surgery twice.
That reminder of how much has changed since then gives this deal extra context. Leicester City now need players who can help stabilise the squad, and Ings offers exactly that kind of familiarity with the level they want to reach again.
The timing is also important. Leicester City begin their 2026-27 League One campaign on Aug 15 with a trip to Notts County, so this is a move that needs to be completed quickly if it is going to help the club settle before the season starts.
It may not be the most eye-catching signing of the summer, but it is the sort of deal that says something about where Leicester City are right now. Experience, reliability and a short-term commitment are the priorities, and Danny Ings appears set to be part of that process.
