Matthew Rhys helped push Apple TV+ Widow's Bay renewal into awards-season territory as Apple said the series landed 19 Emmy nominations after its first season. The total puts Widow’s Bay among the day’s biggest comedy plays, while Apple’s wider tally reached 89 nominations across 15 programs.
That haul came as the Television Academy announced nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. Widow’s Bay was one of the titles carrying Apple’s broader push in Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Comedy, but its own result was concentrated: acting, directing, writing, and editing all showed up on the list.
Matthew Rhys leads the list
Matthew Rhys received an Outstanding Lead Actor nomination for Widow’s Bay, the clearest individual signal that the series did more than land in the comedy field. Kate O’Flynn, Dale Dickey, and Stephen Root were nominated in Outstanding Supporting Actor, while Hamish Linklater and Betty Gilpin were nominated in Outstanding Guest Actor.
Six acting category nominations in one series is a strong sign of breadth, not just one breakout performance. For Apple, that kind of spread helps turn a single title into a multi-slot awards contender rather than a one-off category entrant.
Comedy label, broad reach
Widow’s Bay is described as a comedy, yet its Emmy slate reaches beyond the usual narrow lane for the category. Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Editing nominations put craft recognition alongside the acting field, which makes the show look less like a one-note submission and more like a full-season awards package.
Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, said, “Great stories have the ability to entertain, surprise, and bring people together, and these unprecedented nominations recognize shows that have done exactly that” and “We are in awe of the world-class storytellers we have the opportunity to collaborate with every day and are deeply grateful to the Television Academy for celebrating them.” He also said, “Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees whose brilliant work has connected with viewers everywhere.”
September 14 decides the winners
The final test comes on September 14, when the winners of the 78th Emmy Awards will be unveiled. Until then, Widow’s Bay has already done what Apple needed: it converted a first season into 19 nomination slots, gave Matthew Rhys a lead-actor play, and turned a comedy into one of the company’s most visible awards assets.
