Queens Park Rangers have moved quickly to add Calum Ward after a standout season at Motherwell, bringing in the 25-year-old goalkeeper on an undisclosed fee following a campaign that underlined his rise in the Scottish Premiership.
Ward arrives at Loftus Road with strong momentum behind him. Last season he helped Motherwell finish fourth, their highest league position in six years, and he also kept 20 clean sheets, including nine in a row, as the club set two records through his performances.
Why QPR moved for Ward
For Queens Park Rangers, the appeal is obvious. Christian Nourry described Ward as the outstanding shot-stopper in the Scottish Premiership last season and said it was a pleasure to bring him to QPR.
He also highlighted the qualities that made the move stand out. Nourry said Ward is brave, strong in battles on defensive set-pieces in a league he described as as brutal as the EFL Championship in that regard, and also noted his excellent ability with the ball at his feet.
That combination matters. Goalkeepers are judged not only on saves, but on command, presence and the ability to cope when matches become physical. QPR have signed a player who arrives with proof he can deliver all three.
A season that changed his profile
Ward’s own assessment of Motherwell’s year was equally telling. He said the team were slow starters, but once the season got going, they found their first win and kicked on from there.
He added that the clean sheets were obviously nice to collect personally, but stressed that the bigger story was collective. In his words, it was a season that you could not really believe as a team.
That is the sort of background clubs look for when they want a signing to strengthen the mood as well as the squad. Ward has not just arrived off the back of numbers, but off the back of a season where Motherwell grew into something much stronger.
For QPR, the key question now is how quickly he adapts to a new setting and a new challenge. But the evidence from Motherwell is clear enough: this is a goalkeeper in form, with confidence, and with a record that suggests he can handle pressure.
