Jordan Walker is in the field for the 2026 Home Run Derby, making him the fifth confirmed participant for Monday’s event at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Walker announced the news on Instgram, adding another notable name to an All-Star showcase that already includes Albert Pujols, Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carroll and Francisco Álvarez. For Walker, the invitation adds another milestone to a season that has already pushed him into the spotlight.
Walker’s breakout has changed the conversation
Walker entered the season with strong prospect pedigree after being drafted by the Cardinals in the first round in 2020 and ranking as MLB.com’s No. 4 overall prospect in 2023. Since then, his path has been more uneven than many expected. From 2023 to '25, he ranked 225 out of 229 qualified players in fWAR and hit.240/.302/.378 with 27 homers in 279 games.
This year has looked different. Walker is hitting.294/.355/.534 with 21 homers and an MLB-leading 70 RBI in 89 games, production that helped turn him into a breakout-year All-Star selection. The power numbers are especially important because they have made him the primary driving force for a Cardinals team that was thought to be rebuilding but instead has played its way into the race.
A timely addition for St. Louis
The Cardinals entered play on Thursday with a 48-43 record and were two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins in the NL wild card race. That context matters because Walker’s rise has come at the same time as the team has pushed into playoff contention.
He is also giving the Cardinals another Home Run Derby representative for the first time since Albert Pujols in 2022. The event itself has been part of the All-Star festivities since 1985, and Walker now gets to join that stage as one of the youngest and most recognizable hitters in the field.
For now, the main question is simple: how far can his power carry him on Monday? The answer will not change his season, but it will add one more national showcase to a year that has already changed his standing with the Cardinals and around the league.
