Danielle Thorne says South Wales Police probe after 18-year-old dies

South Wales Police arrested an 18-year-old man from Morriston after a crash in Gorseinon left another 18-year-old dead and a 19-year-old injured on Thursday afternoon. Police were called to Pen Cae Crwn Road in Gorseinon, Swansea, at 12:58 BST.

The dead man was believed to be from Swansea, and the injured 19-year-old was taken to hospital. The crash involved a car and an off-road bike, and the arrest also covered driving a motor vehicle dangerously, driving while unfit through drugs, and driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.

Det Ch Insp Danielle Thorne said, “There is significant police activity in the area and will continue for several hours, however we are working at pace to conduct enquiries in this complex investigation,” and added, “We have significant resources working to lift these road closures as soon as possible.” She also urged witnesses to get in touch with police.

The Welsh Ambulance Service was called to two incidents in Gorseinon on Thursday, at 12:59 and again at 13:10. In the first, a patient was taken to hospital after an air ambulance was called to the scene.

Roads in and around Gorseinon

Pen Cae Crwn Road was closed between Cecil Road and the junction of Frampton Road, while Brighton Road, Brynteg Road and Pontardulais Road were also closed. Residents were earlier told to stay in their homes, and the closures caused a major traffic build-up in and around Gorseinon throughout Thursday afternoon.

The arrest leaves the investigation focused on how a crash between a car and an off-road bike led to a murder allegation. That level of charge means police will be testing the sequence of events, the driving allegations and the scene evidence against the injuries and the death before the road network can fully reopen.
