The 24-year-old striker joined Hull from Blackpool in January 2025 for £2.5m and went on to make 65 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and providing five assists. He was also a key part of Hull City's promotion campaign last term.

The move to Middlesbrough is a long-awaited one. Joseph was set to sign for Boro at the back end of June, only for the deal to collapse at the last minute. It has now been resurrected in the past few days, with the transfer finally completed.

Why the move matters

For Hull City, the sale may help the club's Financial Fair Play situation as they continue to manage their squad and finances. Losing Joseph means moving on a forward who contributed consistently and was involved in one of the club's biggest moments of the season.

His availability has also been shaped by injury. Joseph was hurt in a challenge during the semi-final second leg at Millwall, underwent ankle surgery a few days before the Wembley game and later celebrated on the pitch on crutches after Hull City's Championship play-off final win over Sheffield Wednesday.

He is expected to return from injury in the next couple of weeks, which gives Middlesbrough a clearer idea of when they may be able to add him to the squad at the Riverside Stadium.

For Middlesbrough, the appeal is straightforward: they are bringing in a 24-year-old forward with Championship experience, a promotion pedigree and room to grow. For Hull, it marks the end of a productive spell that began with a £2.5m move from Blackpool and now ends with a larger fee heading the other way.
