Manchester City have signed Niamh Charles from Chelsea on a three-year deal, adding an experienced England defender to their squad through 2029.

The move comes after a summer in which Leila Ouahabi departed Manchester City, and it gives the WSL champions an established option at left-back. Sky Sports reported that Charles is likely to replace Ouahabi in that role.

Charles arrives with a strong track record at the top level. The 27-year-old has won five WSL titles and 12 major titles overall since joining Chelsea from Liverpool in 2020, and she has also earned 34 England caps. She is part of the England squad for Euro 2025.

Her last two seasons at Chelsea were less busy, with Charles making 12 league appearances in the first and 11 in the next. Before that, she had been a regular under Emma Hayes, featuring in over 20 WSL matches in three consecutive seasons. The move to Manchester City offers her a fresh start after struggling for game time under Sonia Bompastor.

Charles said the decision felt like the right fit because of City’s success, the direction of the club and the people around the team. She also pointed to conversations with friends already at the club, saying they spoke positively about the environment, the support on and off the pitch and the way players are improving in training and matches.

For City, the signing fills an obvious need and adds a player with major trophy experience. For Charles, it is a chance to re-establish herself as a regular in a new setting and join a team she believes matches her style of play.
