This was not the kind of night that leaves much room for humility. Belgium went into the Round of 16 with questions hanging over them, and by the end of a 4-1 win over the USMNT, Thibaut Courtois was making the point that loud performances are sometimes the only language people understand.
Courtois said Belgium had been disrespected in the United States, and he was not exactly being shy about why. The message was simple: people talked as if Belgium could be brushed aside, and Belgium responded by taking control of the match and moving into the quarterfinal against Spain.
Courtois turns the conversation back on the USMNT
Belgium had already done enough in the tournament to know that nothing should be taken for granted. Their narrow escape from a 2-0 deficit against Senegal in a recent match had created doubt, and that is exactly the sort of thing that can follow a team into the next round. But Courtois clearly saw the 4-1 result as more than a victory. It was an answer.
“In recent days, we have been disrespected here in the United States,” he said. “It was being said that they could beat us easily, but I think today we showed that we are a good team.” That is a keeper speaking with the confidence of someone who believes the scoreboard settled the argument.
He also said Belgium wanted to pin the United States back from the start and create chances, and that once they did, the USMNT began to doubt themselves. He even suggested the previous 5-2 friendly defeat had stayed in the Americans’ heads. “We played a great match,” Courtois said, and on this evidence that is hard to argue with.
A result with edge, and a quarterfinal with extra spice
There was also a bit of pre-match noise around Folarin Balogun’s rescinded red card, which only added to the sense that Belgium had been asked plenty of questions before the game even started. In the end, though, Belgium answered with the only thing that really counts in knockout football: a ruthless result.
Courtois’ comments carried a personal twist too, because Spain is his second country. That makes the quarterfinal feel different from a routine next step. He said the matchup will be special, and even joked that his young son will have to support Belgium if he wants to come home. That is the sort of line that tells you the mood in the Belgium camp is positive, but also that they know the real work starts again now.
For Belgium, the 4-1 win was not just progress. It was a statement. For the USMNT, it was a reminder that talk is cheap once the match starts. And for Courtois, it was a chance to say out loud what the performance already made obvious: Belgium are still standing, and they are not interested in being treated like an afterthought.
