Dru Brown is set to make his first start for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers since Oct. 27, 2023 when they face the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night at Princess Auto Stadium.
The move comes after Zach Collaros suffered a neck injury on the first play of the second quarter in Sunday’s 14-13 road win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Brown was already in line for more work after being traded to Winnipeg in late June, but he initially was not fully versed in the playbook. Now, the 29-year-old gets the chance to lead the offense in Week 6.
Why Brown is getting the start
Brown’s path back into the lineup has been shaped by both timing and trust. Earlier this season, he lost his starting job with the Ottawa Redblacks before coming to Winnipeg. On Thursday, after walkthrough, Brown said he was looking forward to the opportunity and described the environment as the best in the league. He also said he is excited to play with the group of players in the locker room and wants to do right by the team.
Mike O'Shea said Brown brings confidence because of his experience and professionalism. He also noted that Winnipeg felt the best short-term option was a quarterback who had gone through the whole training camp and knew everything. That matters in a week like this, especially when the playbook has already had to be adjusted once because of injury.
What the matchup means for Winnipeg and Toronto
For Winnipeg, the game is about more than simply replacing Collaros. The Blue Bombers are trying to stop early-season home losses after dropping their first two games at home. Brown’s start gives them a familiar passer who has been around the organization before, including his last start for the Blue Bombers in that season-finale win over the Calgary Stampeders on Oct. 27, 2023.
Toronto, meanwhile, is in an unusual spot as the home team at Princess Auto Stadium because BMO Field has temporarily been taken out of use after hosting World Cup matches. That creates a different kind of home game for the Argonauts, while also giving the Blue Bombers a chance to play a meaningful Week 6 game in their own building with a new quarterback under center.
There is still uncertainty around how much Brown will be asked to do, but his message was straightforward: compete and do his best. Winnipeg learned last week that it can survive with a limited playbook, as Taylor Elgersma stepped in for Collaros and completed 11 of 15 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in the win over Hamilton. Brown now gets the larger assignment, and the Blue Bombers will find out quickly how much the offense can expand with him in charge.
