Dwayne Johnson said he took the dice tied to Robin Williams from Jumanji: Open World and then lied when crew members asked about them. The admission turns a tribute prop into a theft story, and it puts a 1995 franchise relic back at the center of a public explanation.
Robin Williams and the dice
Johnson said the dice he wore in Jumanji: Open World were one half of a pair used in the original 1995 Jumanji film. “The last prop that I took from set was the dice that I wore in Jumanji. That is one half of a pair of dice that they used in the original, OG Jumanji. There’s a big scene where the dice are slow rolling, and it’s slow motion and it’s so dramatic. One half of those dice — Die? Dice? — my character wears in the film,” he said.
He added, “And I took that home. Props, they’re always amazing, but you gotta give that back.” That is the practical point in this story: the dice were not just a random keepsake. Johnson framed them as an Easter egg, a direct nod to Robin Williams and the franchise he started, which is why the prop carried more weight than a standard set souvenir.
Las Vegas tribute
Earlier this year, Johnson paid an emotional tribute to Robin Williams at a Sony Pictures event in Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace during CinemaCon. There he said, “This whole franchise would not have started or happened or kicked off in this really beautiful way without one man, and that's Robin Williams,” and also, “If you don't know already, it's one half of the original dice that was used in the original Jumanji Robin, as we like to say, this one's for you.”
In November, he made the same connection in an Instagram video, saying, “Little day one of Jumanji excitement. That was cool. As you see, a little easter egg for Dr. Bravestone. This is the dice from the original Jumanji with Robin Williams, as a show of respect. And a way of honouring Robin and this entire franchise that he started as we film our very last Jumanji. Big finale. Here we go, let's shoot!”
What Johnson told crew
Johnson said the awkward part came when crew members asked whether he still had the dice. “They were like, ‘Hey DJ, do you have the…?’ And I was like, ‘Nah, I gave it — I don’t — ah, I got to go,’” he said. That puts the moment in plain terms: he kept the prop after taking it home, then dodged the question when asked directly.
He also said he took Maui’s magical fishhook from Moana, a detail that fits the same habit of treating props as keepsakes rather than production property. The unresolved piece is the dice themselves. Johnson has described them as a tribute to Robin Williams, but his own account leaves the prop’s final status hanging on the simplest question in the story: whether they were ever returned to the team that asked for them.
