Indian Railways approved ₹381 crore in railway projects to expand Kavach Version 4.0 across Northern Railway and upgrade electric locomotive facilities at Raipur. The package includes a ₹206 crore deployment covering 680 route kilometres and a separate ₹175 crore project for South East Central Railway.
Kavach Version 4.0
The Kavach deployment will cover important sections under the Delhi Division. Kavach Version 4.0 is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system, and this round of spending follows earlier commissioning across major sections, including parts of the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah corridors.
Indian Railways said Kavach Version 4.0 includes improved location accuracy, stronger communication systems and enhanced integration with railway signalling infrastructure. The system has already been expanded across more than 1,300 route kilometres through multiple commissioning milestones, giving the latest approval a wider base than a first-time rollout.
Northen Railway and South East Central
The ₹206 crore project focuses on Northern Railway, while the ₹175 crore project will enhance electric locomotive homing facilities at Raipur under South East Central Railway. The Raipur upgrade is meant to support maintenance needs for a growing electric locomotive fleet and improve operational readiness.
For passengers and railway staff, the practical effect is a split upgrade path: one line of spending pushes safety equipment farther into active service, and the other strengthens the maintenance base that keeps electric locomotives available for duty. The approved 680 route kilometres still leaves the exact Delhi Division sections unnamed, so the broad deployment is clear even if the route list is not yet public.
The approvals point to the next phase of work rather than a finished rollout. Kavach Version 4.0 now has funding to move deeper into Northern Railway, while Raipur is set for a facility upgrade that should help absorb more electric locomotive traffic as the network modernisation programme advances.
