Sam Alabi has taken the next step in his Newcastle United journey by signing his first professional contract on his 17th birthday. It is a significant moment for a midfielder who has already spent time in the club’s senior environment and now moves formally into the professional game.
The deal fits the pathway Newcastle United have been building around the teenager. Alabi joined Newcastle’s Academy from Oldham Athletic as a 14-year-old, and last season he was around the first-team picture on several occasions, including being named in a senior matchday squad for the first time during the UEFA Champions League trip to Olympique de Marseille.
A young player already trusted around senior football
Alabi also featured on the bench for three further competitive fixtures last season as a 16-year-old and trained with Eddie Howe’s squad on a number of occasions. Those experiences mattered. They gave him a sense of what the next level looks like and, just as importantly, showed Newcastle that he could handle it.
In November, Alabi made his first start for United’s under-21s in an EFL Trophy clash against Harrogate Town, before a shin injury in January ruled him out for the rest of the previous campaign. Even with that setback, the broad picture remained clear: Newcastle had seen enough to believe the pathway was real.
Why Alabi chose to stay and push on
Alabi said the chance to keep advancing through the Academy helped convince him to sign. He described the opportunity as eye-opening and said the club’s pathway, along with the chances he was given last season, played a major part in his decision.
He called it a “very good moment” and said it reflected the “sacrifice, hard work and levels of dedication” he has put in. He added that there is “more to achieve”, which is exactly the right attitude at this stage of his career.
That sense of self-belief runs through everything he has said about his rise. Alabi said he felt Newcastle offered something different and outside his comfort zone, but that he backed himself, believed he was good enough, and felt his qualities and desire had brought him to this point.
What comes next for Newcastle and Alabi
The immediate challenge now is to turn a professional contract into genuine first-team progress. Alabi said he wants to “kick on”, push into the first team and make his debut as the season begins.
He also spoke about the importance of resilience after the injury, saying the setback taught him to stay focused and keep going. That is often the real test for young players: not whether they can handle a good spell, but whether they can respond when momentum is interrupted.
Steve Harper summed up the mood around the move by saying Alabi “took a big step coming to Newcastle at a young age and he’s embraced every challenge since.” That is a strong endorsement, and it underlines why this contract matters. Newcastle United have not just rewarded potential; they have backed a player they already trust around the senior picture.
For Alabi, though, this is only the start. He said as much himself: “I’ve started something so it’s up to me to finish it.”
