Alexander Zverev beat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on Day 10 at Wimbledon. Federico Cina appears in the topic line, but the match itself belonged to Zverev and Fritz. The result sent Zverev into his first Wimbledon semifinal.
Fritz, the No. 6 seed and the last American man standing, had been playing through knee tendinitis for much of the season. He received treatment on his right knee during the second set, then told reporters, “I would have liked to feel 100 percent and try to give him a match.”
Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon
Zverev, the No. 2 seed, had never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon before this run. He won three-quarters of the points on his second serve, a sharp edge in a match where Fritz never fully recovered after the early pressure.
The win also fit Zverev’s recent form on the sport’s biggest stages. He entered the quarterfinal after winning his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, then backed that up with the cleanest Wimbledon performance of his tournament so far.
Taylor Fritz and the knee issue
Fritz’s result carried a complication that had been building for months. He had won his previous seven matches against Zverev, including a grass-court meeting last month in Germany, before losing this one in straight sets.
After the match, Fritz said, “I felt fine, felt really good in my warm-up actually. Felt like my warm-up was great. Then, yeah, I have no answers as to why three games in it was like that.”
Arthur Féry on Centre Court
Arthur Féry, a British wild card, advanced on Centre Court by upsetting No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6, 6-0. Zverev’s own quarterfinal had already been delayed by three consecutive days on court because his fourth-round match against Jiří Lehečka did not finish before the 11 p.m. curfew on Monday.
That leaves Zverev moving forward with momentum and a lighter immediate workload than the marathon that brought him there. The next test is Arthur Féry, and the question now is whether Zverev can turn a first Wimbledon semifinal into something deeper after the breakthrough finally arrived.
