George Lombard Jr. close to return after mid-June injury

For a Yankees prospect whose rise had already started to accelerate in June, the timing of George Lombard Jr.’s injury made the setback more frustrating than dramatic. The good news is that the pause now sounds temporary. On Thursday, Aaron Boone said Lombard is close to a return after being sidelined since the middle of June with sprained fingers on his glove hand.

That matters because Lombard was not just waiting out the injury; he had been playing better before it happened. Through 42 games, the 2023 first-round draft pick was hitting.231 with four home runs, 15 RBIs and eight stolen bases. In June, though, his production jumped: he hit.306 with a.426 on-base percentage and a.997 OPS across 14 games. That kind of month does not guarantee anything, but it does change the shape of the conversation around a young player trying to force his way into the next level.

What the Yankees are saying

The injury date is clear. On June 16, Lombard exited a Triple-A game early after appearing to injure his left hand, and the Yankees said the next day that tests came back negative and he had a few sprained fingers. Since then, he has been on the shelf while the club waited for the hand to heal enough for him to resume baseball activity.

Now he has resumed hitting and fielding, which is the most encouraging sign in this kind of update. Boone’s phrasing was careful, but it was also positive: Lombard is close to a return. Brian Cashman added later on Thursday that Lombard might be a choice at some point in the second half of the season, which is a meaningful line for a player who is still only 21 years old.

Why this update matters

There is also a broader evaluation tucked into Cashman’s comments. He said Lombard is “plug-and-play ready to go defensively and has closed the gap he had coming into the season offensively.” That is a notable assessment for a young shortstop prospect, because it suggests the organization sees him as more than just a tools-based project. The defense is already considered dependable enough to matter now, and the offense is moving closer to where it needs to be.

That does not mean the Yankees are about to make a major decision immediately. It does mean Lombard’s return could put him back into the mix quickly if he proves healthy and continues the offensive progress he showed in June. For now, the most important part of the story is simply that the injury appears to be easing, and a return to game action no longer sounds distant.

For a prospect trying to turn a strong month into something more, that is a useful place to be. The second half of the season may still be where the real opportunity arrives, but Lombard is at least moving toward it again.
