Gardaí have upgraded the death of in to a murder investigation after a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at a house on on Tuesday. The appeal now centres on witnesses and camera footage from a set time window around the house in .

Gardaí at Muckross Road

Officers were called to the Homeland housing estate in Killarney on Tuesday and preserved the scene while the state pathologist completed a post-mortem examination on Wednesday. Gardaí later said they are "engaging with international law enforcement partners" as the inquiry widened beyond the .

They also appealed for help from anyone who was in the area of Killarney between the evening of the 6th and the afternoon of the 7th of July 2026. "Anyone who was in the Muckross Road area of Killarney between the evening of the 6th and the afternoon of the 7th of July 2026 and who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dashcam, is asked to provide this footage to investigating Gardaí," they said.

Councillor said he understood that Carney was the mother of a young teenager and said he had often seen her walking in the area. Speaking to near the cordon at the Homeland estate, he described a "dark cloud" over Killarney and said the town had "descended into a complete malaise" since the killing.

O'Donoghue also said the Homeland estate on Muckross Road is in a very desirable part of the town that is sometimes referred to as the Golden Mile. His remarks place the case in the middle of a neighbourhood where people are likely to know the route, the houses and the vehicles that passed through that stretch.

The complication for investigators is timing. Gardaí said the man they wanted to speak to had already left the in the early hours of Tuesday before the body was discovered, and RTÉ reported that he took a bus to and then a flight to the Middle East.
